Top 3 Headshot Questions Answered

People have a lot of questions about headshots. These are the three I hear the most:

How much do headshot photos cost?

Headshot pricing can vary widely; it depends on your location and the experience level of your photographer. Pricing often comes in two parts: a session fee and the price of the photos (though these days most casting directors opt for digitals). In southern California, sessions can range from free to upwards of $1,500. Many photographers offer package pricing based on the number of looks; others charge by the hour and have no limit on looks. Talk to your friends who have headshots and ask about their photographer. If you’re looking online, ask to see examples of a photographer’s work. This is an investment in YOU and it may take some time to find the right person to capture your look.

How do I prepare for my headshots?

Hire the right photographer. A good photographer will listen to your needs and strive to fulfill them.

Select your clothing carefully. Pay close attention to the color and pattern.

Don’t get a facial or a haircut a few days before the session. Some people break out after having a facial, and your hair needs to a week or so after it’s cut to look natural.

Steer clear of alcohol for a few days prior to the shoot. The results of drinking show up in your eyes and your skin.

Practice facial expressions by taking lots of selfies. This can be a little stressful because many people are self-conscious, so try to make it fun and playful.

Examine your selfies to determine if you have a better side, or a better angle.

The ”smize” is real. Headshots are all about your eyes so practice “smiling with your eyes” in the mirror. A slight squint from the lower lid works wonders!

What should I wear for my headshots?

Your wardrobe will depend largely on your profession, how you’ll use the photos, and where the photos are taken.

Neutral solid colors work best (or tone on tone patterns). A headshot is ultimately about you, not your shirt, so steer clear of bold colors and patterns.

Select an outfit that is generally appropriate to your profession. A banker’s corporate headshot is very different from a dog groomers!

Make sure your clothes fit well. The silhouettes should enhance your face.

Style your hair and makeup to how you normally wear it. This isn’t the time to try something new because it may make you feel a little uncomfortable which will show up in the pictures. You can also hire a professional stylist if you don;t want the stress of doing your own hair and makeup. This will also result in a more polished look for the photos.
